Introduction
K-Bio fever continues to be strong this year. From early this year, domestic pharmaceutical
and biopharma companies have successfully developed new drugs and exported related
technologies. They develop new drugs through open-innovation and export not only novel
medicines and but also the platform technologies, raising the status of Korean bioproducts
in the world.
Against this backdrop, pharmaceutical and biopharma companies will mobilize 10 trillion won
by 2023 to promote bio and health sectors, which are considered the next-generation
core industries. The government, by expanding the bio-and-health-related R&D budget
by 30%, actively supporting the boom in the bio industry.
One area that is garnering attention in the pharmaceutical industry is the platform technologies,
which have the potential to be the foundation of new drug development. The next-generation drug development platforms not only raise the possibility of successful identification of drug candidates
but are becoming the original technology that increases the diversity and efficiency
in developing new molecules.
Thus, the R&D investment on new drug development is escalating across the globe,
and platform technologies are rising as a new growth engine for pharma
and biopharma companies. It was also applied in developing the COVID-19 vaccine recently.
Utilizing technologies like artificial intelligence, big data, organoid and 3D-printing,
the platform technology is the core driver in improving efficiency in drug development process.
Thus, the application of this technology
can reduce time and cost in novel drug research and development,
and it can enable the development of other new drugs from one molecule
and open the opportunity for pharmaceutical firms to out-license drugs.
As such, the Financial News is hosting the 13th Seoul International New Pharmaceuticals Forum
as a venue to discuss new opportunities platform technologies provide in drug development
with the experts and representatives from related organizations.
