Prof. Youngtack Shim received his B.S. and M.S. in chemical engineering from Seoul National
University and KAIST (both in Korea). Prof. Shim received his PhD in biomedical engineering and JD,
both from Duke University (U.S.). He then worked as a patent attorney for the major U.S. patent law
-firms such as Fish & Richardson and Pennie & Edmonds. After returning to Korea, Prof. Shim worked
as the COO in the Technology Licensing Office at his alma mater (SNU) and then managed “Intellectual
Ventures Korea” as the President. Almost for a decade, he then had served his alma mater as the Invited
Professor of Law at the School of Law at SNU, while teaching patent law and commercialization.
Prof. Shim is now a professor at SUNY Korea (Songdo, Korea), while actively involved in a Korean software
startup “Firstface” as the Co-CEO. Inventor Shim is still inventing in anytime and anywhere he sees fit.
