Professor, Virginia University
Bob Webb is the Martin J. Patsel, Jr., Research Professor at the McIntire School of Commerce
at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Virginia, U.S.A. He is also the Editor of the Journal
of Futures Markets—a leading academic journal in finance that focuses on publishing research
on derivative securities and markets. His background includes service in business, government
and academia. Specifically it includes: trading fixed income securities for the Investment
Department of the World Bank (Consultant); trading financial futures and options on the floor of
the Chicago Mercantile Exchange (Member); designing new financial futures and option
contracts for the Chicago Mercantile Exchange (Senior Financial Economist); analyzing the
effects of deregulating the financial services industry, among others, at the Executive Office of
the President, Office of Management and Budget (Senior Financial Economist); examining
issues related to international futures markets at the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading
Commission (Senior Financial Economist). He earned his M.B.A. and Ph.D., degrees in
finance from the University of Chicago. He held a joint appointment at the Korea Advanced
Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) Business School in Seoul, Korea for three years.
He has written opinion pieces for The Wall Street Journal, (USA) Investors’ Business Daily,
(USA) Nikkei Weekly, (Japan), MK Economic Newspaper (Korea) and the Nihon Keizai
Shimbun (Japan). He has published his research in a number of academic journals including
the Journal of Econometrics and the Journal of Business and Economic Statistics and is the
author of the books, Trading Catalysts: How Events Move Markets and Create Trading
Opportunities, and Macroeconomic Information and Financial Trading and the co-author of the
books, Investment Strategy and State and Local Economic Policy, and Shock Markets: Trading
Lessons for Volatile Times which was published by the FT (Financial Times) Press in April 2013.
Pearson and China Machine Press published the Chinese translation of Shock Markets: Trading
Lessons for Volatile Times, in 2015 under the title, The Real Rules of Trading.
