John Bochnovic
President (Canada)/International Association for the Protection of Intellectual Property (AIPPI)

John Bochnovic is a partner of and the chair of Smart & Biggar, Canada’s largest firm practising exclusively in the intellectual property field. 
He is based in Ottawa and has over 30 years of extensive IP advisory experience. He is a member of the Bars of Ontario and Quebec, and a registered patent and a trade-mark agent. He was a research fellow at the Max Planck Institute in Munich in 1981 and for many years taught patent law at the Faculty of Law at the University of Ottawa. He is currently the President of AIPPI.
 
 
Charles R. McManis
Professor of law/Washington University in St. Louis

Charles R. McManis is the Thomas and Karole Green Professor of Law and former Director of the Intellectual Property & Technology Law Program at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri, U.S.A. He received his B.A. degree from Birmingham-Southern College in 1964, and both his M.A. (in Philosophy) and J.D. degrees from Duke University in 1972. 
Professor McManis has been a frequent visiting lecturer and paper presenter at universities and academic conferences throughout the United States, Asia, Europe, and in South America. During 1993 and 1994, Professor McManis was Fulbright Fellow in Korea, where he lectured and did research at the International Intellectual Property Training Institute in Taejon. He has served as a consultant for the World Intellectual Property Organization, in India, Korea, and Oman, and in 2002 he presented a paper at a Joint WIPO/UPOV Symposium, on the Co-existence of Patents and Plant Breeders’ Rights, in Geneva, Switzerland.
Professor McManis’ book, Intellectual Property & Unfair Competition in a Nutshell, is now in its 7th edition. He is also co-author of Licensing Intellectual Property in the Information Age, the second edition of which was published in 2005 by Carolina Academic Press. He is also the editor of a multi-authored volume, entitled Biodiversity and the Law: Intellectual Property, Biotechnology and Traditional Knowledge (Earthscan/James & James 2007).
 
 
Ryu Takabayashi
Professor of law/Japan Waseda University

Ryu Takabayashi is a Professor of Law at Waseda University, Law School, Tokyo. He graduated from Waseda University, School of Law in 1976. He then graduated from the legal training and Research Institute by The Supreme Court of Japan in 1978. Professor Takabayashi has worked as Associate Judge of Tokyo District Court (from 1978 to 1988) and then as a Judge by the Matuyama District Court (from 1988 to 1990) to eventually become Judge of Tokyo District Court and Associate of the Supreme Court of Japan [Saibansho Chosakan] (from 1990 to 1995).
From 1995 he joined Waseda Law School as an Associate Professor of the School of Law (from 1995 to 1996), as then a Professor from 1996 to present. 
He has written numerous publications, among which:

Hwang Lee
Professor of law/Korea University

Hwang Lee is a professor at the Korea University School of Law since 2008. His academic interest covers competition laws, intellectual property rights, telecommunication laws, government regulations, and Law and Economics.

Prior to joining Korea University, Professor Lee served the Korea Fair Trade Commission for many years while playing a leading role in prosecuting precedent-setting competition law cases including the Microsoft Tying Case. Subsequently, he was appointed as Research Counsel for the Justices of the Supreme Court of Korea (2006). In this role Professor Lee drafted final judgments for an extensive array of competition and administrative law cases, including the landmark POSCO Judgment (2007) that dealt with abuse of dominance. He has also worked as a consultant at the Division of Competition Law and Policy of OECD in Paris (1998) and clerked at the Northeast Regional Office of the Federal Trade Commission in New York (2002-2003). 

In September 2010, Professor Lee established the Innovation, Competition & Regulation Law Center (the “ICR Law Center”) at Korea University, a research institution that specializes in interdisciplinary research of intellectual property rights, competition laws, telecommunication laws, and economic regulations. 

As an international expert of antitrust laws, Professor Lee often teaches at U.S. law schools, including Washington University in St. Louis. He is also a frequent speaker and lecturer at diverse international conferences, including events hosted by the American Bar Association and Asian Competition Association.

Professor Lee earned his LL.B. from Korea University and J.D. & LL.M. from Columbia Law School in New York where he was an Executive Editor of the Columbia Journal of Asian Law. He is licensed to practice laws in the State of New York (U.S.) and has advised various Korean and international firms.

Professor Lee is the author of many articles and books. Recent works published in English include: Balancing of Competitive Effects of Abuse of Dominance in Asian Countries, working paper, presented at the 2010 Annual Conference of the Asia Competition Association (2010. 9.); and Hwang Lee & Byung Geon Lee, Korea, in THE INTERNATIONAL HANDBOOK ON PRIVATE ENFORCEMENT OF COMPETITION LAW 542 (Albert A. Young-June Yang

Jay (Young-June) Yang is an attorney at Kim & Chang with over 25 years of experience in all areas of intellectual property practice, including patent, trademark, design, copyright, unfair competition, trade secret and entertainment. Mr. Yang has extensive experience in litigation, enforcement and dispute resolution, including patent litigations, foreign and domestic customs seizures, and international and domestic licensing and distribution disputes. In recent years, he has also been in the forefront of Internet-related legal developments in Korea, including cases of “cyber-squatting” and domain name disputes. He has also been involved in establishing and operating anti-counterfeit campaigns against persistent counterfeiters and infringers, helping many high-profile clients to operate effective campaigns in Korea. Currently, Mr. Yang is the chairman of the Korea Intellectual Property Research Society Inc. He is also a member of the Seoul Bar Association, the Korean Bar Association, and the American Bar Association. He is also a member of the AIPPI, the Korean Patent Attorneys Association, and the Asian Patent Attorneys Association. Mr. Yang is admitted to practice in Korea and New York.

Young-Tack Shim

Prof. Youngtack Shim received his BS and MS in chemical engineering in Korea. After coming to the US in 1985, he received from Duke University his PhD in biomedical engineering and JD. Prof. Shim worked as a patent attorney in the major U.S. patent law-firms such as Fish & Richardson and Pennie & Edmonds. After he returned to Korea in 2006, he worked as the COO in the Technology Licensing Office at Seoul National University (SNU), managed Intellectual Ventures of Korea as President, and now serving his alma mater, SNU, as the Invited Professor of Law at the School of Law as well as the Vice President of the SNU Techno Holdings. Joo-Mee Kim

Ms. Kim is a partner in the firm and she is former president of Korean American Intellectual Property Lawyers association. Ms. Kim’s practice focuses on litigating patent cases and counseling clients for obtaining, licensing and enforcing patents in various technology areas including pharmaceutical, biotechnology, chemical, electronics and mechanical areas. Ms. Kim has a broad range of experience in patent matters both in the United States and Korea. Ms. Kim has extensive experience in patent litigation including Hatch-Waxman litigation, both in district courts and the court of appeals for the federal circuit. David Cynamon

David Cynamon is currently the managing partner of the Abu Dhabi office of the international law firm Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman LLP. He is a litigator with forty years of experience in complex civil and appellate litigation and alternative dispute resolution, including complex contract claims, corporate disputes, trade secret disputes and energy industry disputes. David has handled commercial arbitration and mediation proceedings on behalf of clients in a wide variety of U.S. and international forums. He recently represented a Korean investment bank in connection with a complex commercial dispute in the United States, which included a claim of theft of trade secrets. Since 2006, he has represented the Kuwaiti citizens detained at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.
In 2009, Washingtonian Magazine cited David as one of thirty “stars of the bar” in the District of Columbia. In 2007, the Washington Business Journal named David as D.C. Corporate Litigation Lawyer of the Year. He is also listed in Best Lawyers in America in commercial litigation.
David received his law degree, cum laude, from Harvard Law School in 1973, and graduated, cum laude, from Brown University in 1970 with a B.A. degree in International Relations. He is a member of the District of Columbia Bar and also is admitted to practice before the U.S. Supreme Court and most of the United States federal courts of appeals.

Hak-Kyun Kim

Mr. Kim is a partner in Pillsbury’s Washington DC office and the head of Korea practice group. Mr. Kim’s prior Korea work experience includes working as an economist at the Bank of Korea for 10 years.
Prior to his joining Pillsbury in 2006, Mr. Kim practiced at two prominent DC law firms. At Pillsbury, Mr. Kim helps Korean and Asian corporations in establishing facilities in the U.S. and the Middle East areas. Mr. Kim also advises them in complying with U.S. commercial regulations and helps them navigate the U.S. legislative process. Mr. Kim helps to facilitate foreign investments into Korean and other Asian markets and advises U.S. companies establishing facilities in Korea and Asia.
The scope of his practice includes representation of telecommunications companies, automakers, financial institutions, Internet service providers, international steel companies, energy concerns, food companies, high technology manufacturing corporations and pharmaceutical companies and the Korean government. In 2009, Mr. Kim led the special committee of independent directors of Gmarket, the largest internet auction site in Korea, in the $1.2 billion acquisition by eBay through a negotiated tender offer. He has represented a Korean consortium in connection with the sale of the AIG building (the second tallest building in Manhattan) and a complex real estate dispute in the United States. He also has represented Korean companies and the Korean government for nuclear and renewable energy issues.
Mr. Kim graduated from Seoul National University in 1986 with a B.A. degree in law and in 2001 received J.D. from University of Minnesota Law School. He is a member of the District of Columbia Bar and New York Bar.
