Intro
Korea is an intellectual property powerhouse.
Korea is a member of the ‘IP5’, a group of advanced countries in intellectual property including the United States, China, Japan, Europe and Korea, and is on par with the major economies.
Korea has achieved unprecedented growth in the world through industrialization, called ‘the Miracle of Han River’ and industrialization has blossomed on the soil of intellectual property.
A millionth patent was registered in 2010, 62 years after the first patent of Korea, “Sulfur Dye Manufacturing Method”, was registered on November 20, 1948. In 9 years since then, 2 millionth patent was registered. Through industrialization and informatization, Korea’s intellectual property has grown step by step.
Korea is preparing to solidify its position as an intellectual property powerhouse and jump up to the next level. With the advent of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, opportunity has come. According to trends in patent applications for AI core technologies over the past nine years, applications from ‘IP5’ are increasing by more than 40% annually. The rise and fall of a country depend on the role of intellectual property in the transition period of the Fourth Industrial Revolution.
COVID-19 is also having a huge impact on the intellectual property sector. Some predict that COVID-19 will divide the world into AC( After Corona) and BC(Before Corona). Many people are already talking about how to prepare for the AC world, and the technology and the intellectual property rights system are being the foundation for opening the AC world. This will also be an opportunity for Korea’s intellectual property to take a leap forward.
The Financial News and the Korean Intellectual Property Office will be held the 10th Intellectual Property Protection Conference on July 7, 2020 at the Grand Ballroom of the Westin Chosun Hotel in Seoul. The conference will be held under the theme of “A New Wave of Korean Intellectual Property” with scholars from home and abroad. It will be a place to check the scholars’ opinions on how AI and COVID-19, the new wave, affect intellectual property.
