Intro

In the wake of the coronavirus pandemic, countries around the world are focusing on 

innovation across societies and economies as innovation is deemed to serve as an 

essential growth engine that can drive future growth. The World Innovation Index 

announced the UN WIPO ranked South Korea first in Asia followed by Singapore, 

China and Japan, and was also ranked sixth among 132 countries surveyed.

In this regard, the Korean government may boost innovative growth successfully using 

intellectual properties given that innovative activities such as future investment and patent 

application mainly constitute the calculation of the world innovation index. South Korea was 

ranked first for third straight years in terms of human capital and research that measure 

future investment in this year's World Innovation Index. In addition, South Korea was 

ranked fifth top in two evaluation sectors in terms of calculation due to a rise in the number 

of application for intellectual property rights at home and overseas.

Last year, South Korea was ranked third in terms of research and development investment 

and number of patents followed by the United States and Germany in the rank of IMD science 

infrastructure. However, the protection of intellectual property rights was ranked 37th and 

support for promoting legal innovation in relation to science research was ranked 31st, each 

of which remains far below.

Knowledge property beyond national borders and ideologies suggest new governance 

to the global economy. With the emergence of new task sectors, existing tasks require 

sophistication and efficiency which exceed being in-person. Innovation is far more in dire

 need for now than ever in a bid to take preemptive steps toward a new paradigm beyond 

the existing system.Safeguarding the Korean government's intellectual property and taking 

advantage of it properly will be essential to improving national competitiveness.

The Financial News and the Patent Office will hold the 13th International Intellectual 

Property Protection Conference at the Westin Josun Hotel, Grand Ball Room on the first 

floor at Sogong-dong, Seoul on February 9, 2023 with an aim for the future of Korea's 

intellectual property. Prominent scholars from at home and abroad will gather at this event 

under the theme of "Intellectual Property, the Driving Force of Innovative Growth." 

This event will be an opportune moment to hear insightful views on cases of innovative growth 

and protections from distinguished scholars.
