Intro

Korea is the best-known example of the low fertility country which the fertility rates are

continuously falling for almost 70 years since ever recorded in 1960s. Not quite as much as

here in Korea, the problem of low fertility in other developed countries is also serious. As you

know, low birth rates and population decline is a major set for the national management because

they lead to demand-supply mismatch of labor force and slow growth, etc. On the other hand,

many developing countries are suffering from a great deal of burdens such as having quality

population and supporting the population due to birth more than the optimum population.

Likewise, the population issue is a real headache to the whole world, therefore small or big

debates and seminars have been held in order to seek ways. However, only when needed,

events have been held at home and abroad, but a place where people can meet to conduct

the debate for this issue annually has hardly been provided properly. The Financial News and

Korea Demography Forum have decided to establish this symposium with the purpose of not

only announcing an academic thesis relating to the population, sharing experience on the

population policy of each country, but also providing a place for promoting a national and

international collaboration between the government and civic groups, and would like to hold

the 1st inaugural meeting this year.

This symposium shall be held on July 11, World Population Day and official Population Day in

Korea as well. We would like to announce that the first meeting was decided to be held in autumn

this year due to the preparation and more. Also in the future the symposium may be held in the

relevant country if there is a special issue, however it shall mostly be held in Seoul where the

organizer is located in. The first symposium consists of two parts: Morning session and afternoon

session. In the first part, we shall take a general view of global trends on population agenda

through presentations and debates of domestic and foreign demographers and persons interested,

and in the second part, we shall see how especially Korea regions and industries are hurting from

sharply declining birth rates.

From now on, we guarantee that the organizer shall use its best endeavors to help debate the

population issue and seek solutions, and to provide a valuable place for accumulating wisdom

through this symposium. We earnestly ask all interested parties and everyone in Korea to actively

take part in this event.
